I’m Katrina Shepherd, a family portrait photographer based in Blackburn with Darwen, and my work is built around capturing the small, true moments that make family life special. I specialise in natural, relaxed family photoshoots — usually outside on location among the varied landscapes of Lancashire — though I’m equally comfortable photographing you in your home or against a simple backdrop when that suits your family better. My approach is friendly and unhurried. Before the shoot I like to have a pre-shoot consultation so we can talk about what you’d like to achieve, choose the best location, and get to know one another a little. On the day I meet you at the chosen spot, we quickly go over the plan and then spend around one to two hours working through gentle prompts and playful moments to encourage authentic smiles and interactions. The aim is to keep things calm and fun so children and babies can be themselves — that’s when the best photographs happen. I bring years of photographic training and hands-on experience to every session. My interest in photography started with an old film camera at thirteen, I went on to study photography at university and worked in London as an assistant photographer before establishing my practice in Lancashire. That background gives me a strong technical foundation and a calm, professional manner that helps subjects of all ages feel at ease. After your shoot you’ll be able to view an edited gallery online or arrange an appointment with me at your home to choose the images you love. I focus on creating bright, happy family portraits and candid moments you’ll want to live with on your walls and keep in albums for years to come. While family work is my core focus, I also have experience working with fabrics and baby carriers in a commercial context, which informs how I style and light sessions that include babywearing or cherished family items.
